People would be at a distinct disadvantage without the aid of electronic devices. Miniature transistors and circuit boards can be found in almost every device you use every day. Increasingly, more devices and equipment possess some of the same capabilities and features as desktop computers. Laptops have the same general type of memory as you might find in handheld devices such as cell phones and PDAs. Many types of equipment require memory to optimize the functioning.
In both laptops and desks, memory has what is called a storage tier. Initially, when you start your computer it needs to read the permanent storage by accessing ROM, or Read-Only Memory. Next, you will need to be sure that the Basic Input / Output System, or BIOS, is loaded. The last operation that must be performed is opening the OS, or Operating System. Understanding the complexities involved in why it accesses from one storage type versus another and what type of storage the information is stored on is beyond our scope here; just know that memory works the same in many types of devices. Desktop computers use a very similar type of technology for this process.
Devices use memory to enhance their overall functioning by accessing data quickly; this leads to a fast response. Even your auto has memory to keep track of various settings and favorite radio channels. Devices like your cellular phone and PDA both need memory to use email, access the Internet, and run a variety of applications. Although they lack some of the speed and complex functioning of desktop computers, they do possess many features of the same basic technology.
You would be amazed to know that even basic televisions being sold these days need memory to function properly. A large number of carriers of cable and satellite television are providing the ability to record and pause live television. These operations both need memory to operate; the only difference is that one one uses long-term memory and the other uses short-term memory to access data very fast. Keep in mind that the faster the memory can be accessed by your device, the faster it will run.
Try to imagine all of the electronics you use every day, and the importance of each. Many of us would have serious difficulties functioning without these modern technological devices. It is difficult to think of even one electronic device that does not use some type of memory. They are quite like computers we use every day to help make our lives run more smoothly.
